Freedom or fright? How trauma-informed pedagogy enables freedom for all to learn and teach safely in theological education
Presentation Abstract
A case study in teaching Hebrew Bible texts of violence. Shoshana Felman’s 1991 question “Can trauma instruct pedagogy, and can pedagogy shed light on the mystery of trauma?” continues to provoke analysis today. The study of trauma texts in the humanities, theology, and biblical studies has expanded exponentially. This paper will consider teaching Hebrew Bible texts of violence by navigating the relationship (and tensions) Felman proposed between “learning and crisis” and more recent ideas of a trauma-informed pedagogical practice.
