Theologizing in the Shadow of the Pandemic: Insights from Catholic Social Teaching

This paper will consider, in the shadow of the pandemic, the relevance and application of two of the theological principles of Catholic Social Teaching – “The Common Good” and “Solidarity”.

It will consider the impact of the pandemic in three areas:

  1. travel restrictions and the provision of international aid and missionary co-operation
  2. restrictions on assembly and religious freedom
  3. the politics of vaccine delivery

It will test some examples of social policy in these three areas against the expectations of Catholic Social Teaching relating to the common good and solidarity.
